ISO/IEC 17025

What ISO/IEC 17025 is, and who needs it

ISO/IEC 17025 sets the requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. An important distinction: laboratories are accredited, not certified - in India that accreditation is granted by NABL. What accreditation demonstrates is technical competence to produce valid results, which is a higher bar than having a documented system.

The essentials

What the standard asks of you

🔬

Competence, not just a system

The assessment examines whether your laboratory can technically produce valid results - methods, equipment, staff and environment, not only documentation.

📐

Method validation

Demonstrating that the methods you use are fit for purpose and that results can be relied on.

📏

Measurement uncertainty

Estimating and reporting uncertainty, so results carry a meaningful confidence rather than a bare number.

🔗

Metrological traceability

Calibration traceable to recognised references, which underpins the validity of everything you report.

⚖️

Impartiality and confidentiality

Structural requirements to ensure results are not influenced by commercial or other pressure.

🏅

Recognition of your results

Accredited results carry weight with regulators, customers and across borders - frequently the commercial reason laboratories pursue it.

FAQ

ISO/IEC 17025, answered

Straight answers on scope, timelines and what Ascenvia actually does.

Is ISO 17025 a certification?
No - laboratories are accredited rather than certified, and in India accreditation is granted by NABL. The distinction matters: accreditation assesses technical competence to produce valid results, which goes further than certifying that a management system exists.
Who needs ISO/IEC 17025?
Testing and calibration laboratories - independent labs, in-house laboratories within manufacturers, and calibration service providers. It is often required where results are used for regulatory or contractual decisions.
How is it different from ISO 9001?
ISO 9001 certifies a quality management system. ISO/IEC 17025 assesses technical competence as well - method validation, measurement uncertainty, traceability and staff competence. A laboratory can hold ISO 9001 and still not meet 17025.
What is usually the hardest part?
Measurement uncertainty and method validation. Documentation can be prepared relatively quickly; demonstrating technical competence with real data takes longer and is where most timelines slip.
Can an in-house laboratory be accredited?
Yes. Many manufacturers accredit their in-house testing or calibration laboratory, particularly where customers or regulators need to rely on those results.
What does Ascenvia do for ISO 17025?
Gap assessment, quality manual and technical procedures, method validation and uncertainty estimation, traceability, staff competence and internal auditor training, and full support through the accreditation assessment.
